Ideally as much time as possible so we can confirm your booking and reserve your box. If you are also hiring a roof rack and we don’t have it in stock, we will need time to order it in.
Remember during the summer, school holidays and bank holiday weekends are very busy so it’s advisable to book as early as you can.
Raised roofrails – these run front to back on the car and you can place your fingers between the bottom of the bar and the top of the car.
Flush/Solid Roofrails – again these front to back on the roof however it is NOT possible to place your hand underneath the rail.
Fixed Points? What you will normally see on your car’s roof are 4 plastic covers that when lifted/slipped to one side reveal a fixing point. Often this is a threaded recess, sometimes not.
T-Profile/T-Track basically a metal gully that runs front to back. example
Normal – basically, this means that there is nothing on the top of the roof asides from possibly a plastic trim. People often confuse this with a flush rail which it is not
Unsure? upload a photo or two of your roof within the form and we’ll do the leg work Add an answer to this item.
Question, what is the cubic capacity of each roof box will relate to in practical terms when packing.
A Ford Focus boot is about the same size (in cubic litres) as a Thule Motion M roofbox, and a Porsche Cayenne about the same size as our Thule Motion XXL roofboxes.
Think of a black sack/bin bag as being 80 cubic litres and you can quickly work out the equivalent storage in each of our roofboxes assuming you know your 80 times table!
Height restriction bars will destroy the box. Height restrictions exist in lots of places you never notice because you use them on a day-to-day basis, in a car that easily fits under them. Supermarkets, Playing Fields, Waste Recycling Centres and multi-storey car parks are all places where we have had boxes damaged.
The most common occasion for damaging the box is “before”you leave on holiday and “after” you return, as you make journeys as part of your typical routine.
If the box does get damaged to a condition where it cannot be reused, then you forego the deposit we hold. We do however need the box returned, irrespective of its condition.
Good quality roof boxes are expensive to buy, they are bulky to store (Flat owners/Renters) and you also require a roof rack which can be specific to your car.
So, if you only require one for the odd weekend away or family holiday it can be much more cost effective to hire the size you need.
Yes we do. Although we do ask you to thoroughly check the equipment before you leave as we don’t accept liability for any damage caused either to the vehicle or third parties as a result of fitting the equipment.
Check our Terms and Conditions.
Yes, we do a bar only package BUT why not buy bars? Message us

Your car plus box and bars will exceed 1.80 metres in height, so talk with the Ferry or Train company and ask them if you need to pay any extra. Check their website and you’ll probably find the threshold is ferry (1.80m France; 2.24m Isle of Wight) and Eurotunnel (1.85m).
Number recognition technology is being used more and more by the transport industry. If you have not booked for the extra height, you may be automatically directed in to a lane for low height vehicles, which will in all likelihood have a height restriction barrier.
Typically they range between 15-30 kgs depending on the size and model so not that heavy and most can be mounted by one person on a standard car. Taller vehicles such as SUV’s and 4×4’s may need 2 people to lift it onto the roof bars.
It can – every car is different and it will depend on the type of roof-bar being fitted. A standard square steel bar is noisier and less fuel efficient than the wing bar type roof bars that look like an aircraft wing on their side profile.
If you’re driving a hybrid or EV then the range may also be affected in a similar way.
No you should avoid automated car washes with them in situ.
Each roof box will come with the necessary fittings and the type of fitting will depend on the specification of the roof box.
Smaller/cheaper roof boxes will often have U-Bolts that are secured inside with hand tightening nuts (no tools required).
Higher specification roof boxes will typically have an integrated clamping mechanism that is secured quickly and easily by hand. They sometimes have an in-built torque mechanism so you know when you’ve reached the right torque limit.
